In a small forest, near Varanisi, the five disciples wait and see the Buddha in the distance coming towards them. When the Buddha arrives, one disciple greets, one spreads the mattress, one reports to him, one washes his feet, one prostrates and carries his shawl. the Buddha sits on a boulder and teaches dharma to the five disciples as in the form of fully ordained monks. Gods from above and gods on the left and right sides listen to the Buddha teaching dharma. Three monks visit the Buddha while two monks beg for alms in the city.

Lay out on Earth, King Mahāpadma residing in Rājagṛha, King Mahākosala in Śrāvasti, King Anantanemi in Ujjayinī, King Śatānīka in Kauśāmbi, King Śuddhodana in Kapilavastu with two queens, and King Suprabuddha in Devadāha. Of the six fine palaces, draw five with a good deal of space between them. Make a river in the space between Kapilavastu and Devadāha, near them. In general, draw them however you like, but Kapilavastu should be in a more prominent location. In the intermediate spaces, draw many demi-gods in an attitude of conversing with one another.

Chapter Ka. [5.1] In a fine chamber near the king's palace, draw the Bodhisattva entering the womb of the Lady, ornamented with radiating light rays like the body of a god. The Lady is surrounded by four divine guardians holding a sword, spear, short spear, and large arrows. A large retinue make various offerings. [5.3] The king sets free his prisoners. [5.2 ] The itinerant ascetic called Lohita (mig dmar), resembling a Sāchashi follower today, offers water from the four seas to the mother. Make King Śuddhodana seated near the two of them.

[18.1] Draw the Bodhisattva in the manner of sleeping in a fine chamber. All the women of his harem are overcome with sleep with their clothes strewn about in an unbecoming way. [18.2] Draw the Boddhisattva’s five dreams in five circles within the fine chamber. He uses Mt. Meru as a pillow. He lies on the earth as his bed. His left hand touches the western sea; right hand, the eastern sea; and two feet, the southern sea. In another, a green stalk of grass grows from his navel up to the sky. In another, a flock of birds with white bodies and black heads touch his feet. In another, birds with feathers of various colors gather before him and become a single color. In another, he walks upon piles of impure substances, but he remains unsullied. Draw a scene with Yaśodharā sleeping beside the Bodhisattva. It is taught that she had eight dreams but it is not neecesary to draw them. [18.3] Then in one place draw all the guards and so forth between the walls having fallen asleep. [18.5] In a stone courtyard within the walls, draw [the Bodhisattva] caressing his horse Kaṇṭhaka and Chandaka preparing to put on the saddle. [18.7] In a fine chamber at the top of the palace, King Śuddhodana falls sleep and the Bodhisattva circumambulates his bed and joins his palms together. Aniruddha tugs at king’s robe and wakes him up. [18.8] Riding the horse, the Bodhisattva flies departs into the sky, as is the general convention. Instead of the four guardian kings holding up the horse’s feet, draw four strong gods, with Brahma and Indra walking before him while many gods present offerings.

[19.4-5] Draw the horse Kaṇṭhaka decorated with jewels returning together with Chandaka and arriving home. It is said the horse Kaṇṭhaka is also known as “Faithful horse” and a trumpeter should announce him. But that is just an oral account and has no basis. Since the Indian drawing is authentic, it should be done that way. [19.8-10] Then someone on the form of a hunter offers a saffron robe to the Boddhisattva [19.1-2] who cuts his hair before a stupa. Gods collects the hair, and so forth. These are according to the general convention. Draw many sages in a forest with trees of golden leaves. The sages become unhappy when the forest becomes the “grove of noble trees” and the Bodhisattva joins them in the forest. The cycle on renunciation.

Chapter Ca. [20.1] Draw king Bimbisāra looking from the roof of his palace in Rājagṛha. On a narrow path, the Bodhisattva holds a begging bowl of tsempa leaves and goes begging. The king and his retinue come before the Bodhisattva who is residing in a forest. [20.2 ]In a forest near there, draw sages, some standing on one leg, some performing the torment of the five fires, some entering the water, some becoming enveloped in smoke and forth, [20.3] and the Bodhisattva performing these austerities twice as much. [20.4] Then in a different forest, the Buddha visits the sage Ārāḍa-kālāma and his entourage who is dwelling in a hut of leaves. He then visits the sage Udraka-rāmaputra, who is just like him [Ārāḍa-kālāma]. [21.1 ]Draw the Bodhisattva in a forest with a retinue of five people and many other people having turned and gone away. Draw him performing austerities at the foot of a tree in the center of a grassy meadow surrounded by forest near the bank of the Nairañjanā River. This is according to the general conventions. There are are six forms of ascetic practices that he carries out in order, but just this is sufficient. [21.3] Draw cowherds pushing sticks into his ears and three gods spreading the news, and so forth.

Chapter Ja [24.1-6] While sitting in equanimity on a grass mat beneath the Bodhi Tree, seven messengers who are apparitions of Māra appear. The scene of Māra’s subjugation and the surrounding area should be drawn according to general conventions, and there is no need for a bejeweled throne. In another scene, draw him sitting in equanimity under a Bodhi Tree and gods holding white leaves on the tree’s large branches. According to the traditions of the Abhiniṣkramaṇa and Vinaya, the only scene to be drawn here is Māra’s three daughters trying to seduce the Bodhisattva. The cycle on subduing Māra.

[12.2] In another location, a large tree has fallen and blocked the river, creating the danger of flooding one part of the city. Many men are pulling out the tree. [12.5] A black snake emerges, but a young man in a turban cuts it in the middle with a sword. [12.3] Devadatta shoots a swan down with an arrow. The Bodhisattva heals it. [12.7] The Bodhisattva grabs the tree and tosses it up in the sky with one hand. The tree breaks into two pieces, which fall on to each side of the river.

First, in space, at the center of a cloud that illustrates the divine realm Tuṣita, draw three regions surrounded by jewels and filled with a multitude of flowers, lakes, forests, fine palaces, connected on a single ground. Or draw three disconnected arrangements of Tushita, whichever you like. In the largest arrangement, draw Shvetaketu teaching dharma to an entire retinue of divinities. In one draw Shvetaketu blowing a white conch and a host of divinities playing various instruments with two gods making requests. In the other location draw Shvetaketu placing a crown upon Maitreya.
