Lay out on Earth, King Mahāpadma residing in Rājagṛha, King Mahākosala in Śrāvasti, King Anantanemi in Ujjayinī, King Śatānīka in Kauśāmbi, King Śuddhodana in Kapilavastu with two queens, and King Suprabuddha in Devadāha. Of the six fine palaces, draw five with a good deal of space between them. Make a river in the space between Kapilavastu and Devadāha, near them. In general, draw them however you like, but Kapilavastu should be in a more prominent location. In the intermediate spaces, draw many demi-gods in an attitude of conversing with one another.
[18.1] Draw the Bodhisattva in the manner of sleeping in a fine chamber. All the women of his harem are overcome with sleep with their clothes strewn about in an unbecoming way. [18.2] Draw the Boddhisattva’s five dreams in five circles within the fine chamber. He uses Mt. Meru as a pillow. He lies on the earth as his bed. His left hand touches the western sea; right hand, the eastern sea; and two feet, the southern sea. In another, a green stalk of grass grows from his navel up to the sky. In another, a flock of birds with white bodies and black heads touch his feet. In another, birds with feathers of various colors gather before him and become a single color. In another, he walks upon piles of impure substances, but he remains unsullied. Draw a scene with Yaśodharā sleeping beside the Bodhisattva. It is taught that she had eight dreams but it is not neecesary to draw them. [18.3] Then in one place draw all the guards and so forth between the walls having fallen asleep. [18.5] In a stone courtyard within the walls, draw [the Bodhisattva] caressing his horse Kaṇṭhaka and Chandaka preparing to put on the saddle. [18.7] In a fine chamber at the top of the palace, King Śuddhodana falls sleep and the Bodhisattva circumambulates his bed and joins his palms together. Aniruddha tugs at king’s robe and wakes him up. [18.8] Riding the horse, the Bodhisattva flies departs into the sky, as is the general convention. Instead of the four guardian kings holding up the horse’s feet, draw four strong gods, with Brahma and Indra walking before him while many gods present offerings.
